Tideswell Swift Walk
In 2025, Tideswell Swift surveyors counted 26 Swift nests in Tideswell village - an important process since unless we know where the Swift nests are, we cannot protect them. People can unwittingly block nest sites during home renovations when the Swifts aren’t here, only for the birds to return from their 14,000 mile journey to find their previous home destroyed.
To celebrate Tideswell's Swifts, Claire Mead (Project Coordinator) and Kathleen (Tideswell swift champion) are hosting an evening Swift walk on Wednesday 24 June at 20:30-21:30 meeting at Fountain Square, Tideswell (https://w3w.co/loaded.estimate.gratuity). You can find out more about the walk on Tideswell & District Environment Group's website: https://tdeg.org.uk/meetings-events/tideswell-swift-walk/.
Numbers of Common Swift (apus apus) have declined across the UK by more than 60% over the last 25 years, a statistic reflected by their designation as a red-listed bird of conservation concern (2021, UK Conservation Status Report). Help us conserve Derbyshire’s Swifts by attending one of our walks or signing up as a volunteer surveyor:
